The Catholic Church has attacked the worship of Santa Muerte as a pagan tradition contrary to Church teaching. On March 24, 2009 the Mexican army dismantled 30 capillas dedicated to Santa Muerte in Nuevo Laredo and Tijuana because of their strong links with drug trafficking.
(CNA reports )
David Romo Guillen, leader of the devotion to “St. Death,” especially popular among drug traffickers and criminals, called for a “holy war” against the Catholic Church after the Mexican Army destroyed several places of worship it suspected to be criminal hideouts, especially in the northern part of the country. "Only terrorist or fundamentalist leaders call for holy wars, like Bin Laden or the Taliban. It’s a shame that Mr. Romo makes himself equal to the Taliban or a terrorist by calling for a holy war,” said Father Hugo Valdemar, spokesman of the Archdiocese of Mexico City.

I've never heard of this death saint before, though I am familiar with the Day of the Dead celebrations. I'm not at all sure the church will fare well in this battle and for reasons that have to nothing to do with drug lords or terrorists.
