Barack Obama has inflicted crushing defeats on Hillary Clinton in Washington DC, Maryland and Virginia. This has been a black day for Clinton. Not alone has Obama eaten into Clinton's strong support among whites and amongst the elderly but he also now has a slight lead in the delegate count. Texas, Ohio and Pennsylvania are now pivotal states. A Failure to win these would probably cost Clinton the nomination.
John McCain's progress to the GOP nomination continues unabated with victories in Washington DC, Maryland and Virginia. McCain must now unify the Republican Party by winning over conservative sceptics. In addition he must articulate policies that resonate with the public-policies which are grounded on solid conservative principles and which will improve living standards. An over emphasis on his war record will be a turn off for the majority of voters. This election will be won and lost on the economy and the competence of the presidential candidates.When McCain wins the nomination he must bring Mike Huckabee on board his campaign. He would make an excellent vice presidential candidate.

Mitt Romney withdraws from GOP race with carefully crafted speech on conservative principles
Today at the Conservative Convention in Washington DC Mitt Romney announced his intention to withdraw from the race for the GOP nomination. Romney’s poor performance on Super Tuesday effectively scuppered his prospects as he trailed far behind McCain in convention delegates
Romney’s speech was a tour de force. It was characterised by a clear-cut elucidation of conservative principles. It was arguably the greatest speech that he has ever given.
He emphasized the importance of the family-father and mother- to society. He attacked the culture of death. He emphasized the damage done by abortion to European society. He lambasted the nanny state.
He emphasized the importance of private enterprise and attacked government bureaucracy and excessive pay rates for government bureaucrats. He attacked wasteful government expenditure. He strongly supported McCains stance on the War on Terror. His decision to withdraw was based on a determination not to split the party. He claimed that any split in the party would ensure the election of either Clinton and Obama.
If John McCain is elected President it is likely that he may serve only one term on age grounds. Romney’s pragmatic decision and strong support for conservative principles ensures that he is likely to secure the GOP nomination in the future.
Today marks the first step in the healing process in the GOP and greatly strengthens its prospects of securing the Presidency.

Kennedy endorses Obama and nukes Hillary Clinton
Today at the American University in Washington DC Senator Edward Kennedy in the presence of Patrick Kennedy and Caroline Kennedy endorsed Barack Obama. This is a huge boost for the Obama campaign. Kennedy will use his undoubted powers of persuasion to woo labour and Latinos into the Obama fold. At this juncture Hillary Clinton has much greater support amongst labour and Latinos than Obama. Obama's prospects of securing the nomination may rise or fall depending on Kennedy's success. Edward Kennedy views Obama as the new JFK.
“It is time again for a new generation of leadership,” Mr. Kennedy said.. “It is time now for Barack Obama.”................ “With Barack Obama, there is a new national leader who has given America a different kind of campaign — not just about himself, but about all of us,” Mr. Kennedy said. “A campaign about the country we will become, if we can rise above the old politics that parses us into separate groups and puts us at odds with one another.” This is a slashing attack on Hillary Clinton and is calculated to inflict the maximum damage on her campaign in the run in to Super Tuesday or Tsunami Tuesday. It is probable that the ugly campaign tactics used by the Clintons may have been the final straw for Kennedy.
In addition John Kerry has already endorsed Obama. His endorsement is also significant. In an email to three million supporters of his 2004 presidential campaign he stated. "We must stop the swiftboating, stop the push-polling, stop the front groups, and stop the email chain smears". Here he was attacking the Clinton campaign.
The support of Kennedy and Kerry should ensure that the race for the Democratic party nomination will tighten. Nevertheless Clinton is still the marginal favourite. Can the endorsements of Kennedy and Kerry overpower the Clinton machine?
