Homeless Henry is better off in the mountains above the capital. There are some 6000 homeless here in Colorado alone. It is not safe on the streets but many live in the wooded parks. We have about 120veterans here in town who live in the parks and private woods. I work with some of them at shelters and we share coffee and I usually carry some tobacco for roll your own to give them. Some you can talk into going for help at the VA and others still do not trust the government. Some are just in tents, others on the ground, small dugout caves and some sleep under the interstates at night. Which is a $50 fine if caught. A few have gas stoves, lanterns, radios and small televisions. Most go to the sheleters during the day for food and other items. Many I know are quite educated, use the library for books and computers and have just fallen on hard times. There are churches that go out in the woods and give out hats, gloves, toilet articles and talk about God. Many shelters have services or volunteers come in to preach, gives classes on alcohol, drugs, homeless programs and the people are very giving here in Colorado Springs. When it gets real cold or blizzards come they open more space so homeless people can get in out of the cold. They kind of live in small cumminites of about 10 or less and more and more they have whole families and children. The state is trying to get all homeless off the streets by 2010 but are making very little progress. Homeless Henry looks in fairly good shape, fed and at least has a small shed over his head. It must be a lonely life having family and not being around them. Most of us do not know how well we have it. May you and your own have a happy, safe holiday. This Christmas I will think of Ireland, you and Homeless Henry and say a small prayer. I have enjoyed your posts this year and look forward to them in 2009 God willing.
Thanks rainywalker. The story that you have just outlined is very sad. This is a time to think of those who have fallen on hard times. I have enjoyed the originality of your blog. You have produced highly informative posts throughout the year. I have learned a great deal from them. Happy Christmas to you and a great 2009
The plight of the homeless here in the US has always been a rough one. The past decade and especially the last few years has seen an alarming increase in violence and hate crimes against transient and poor peoples. Unfortunately, this information has largely been withheld from the public view. Law enforcement has been increasingly used to drive homeless people off of public land, private land and increasingly, incarcerate them. The media has been at least covertly reinforcing both the violence and the harassment by the way they have conducted their coverage of issues related to them.
