Montserrat Grases: Spanish Teenager of Great Sanctity

Montserrat Grases died in intense pain at the age of 17 from bone cancer, but her short life gave exemplary witness to the peace that comes from a closeness with God; we can learn much from "Montse" (her nickname) and benefit by her intercession in our lives. Told of her terminal cancer, she went to pray. She sang a Spanish folk song that translates: "When I was living so happily, without thinking of love, you wanted me to love you and I loved you passionately. And I will continue to love you even after death. For I love you with the soul and the soul never dies.

"Montse grew up in Barcelona, Spain in a Catholic family of 11; Her parents sought to create a family climate in which sincere faith was fostered with great respect for the children’s freedom. Montse loved to hike, ski, and play tennis and basketball. She was very devout in her faith, and she makes the faithful her children in spirit.Facing the tabernacle each day, she told our Lord all about her joys, her studies, and her effort to be more gentle and caring. She offered her sufferings to others: her friends, the Pope, and to St. Josemaria. Looking at a picture of the Virgin Mary, her last words were, "How much I love you! When are you coming for me?" She died on Holy Thursday, 26 March, 1959.

The process for her cause of canonization was opened in Barcelona on December 19, 1962 — four years after her death — and was closed on March 26, 1968, the 9th anniversary of her death. On February 22, 1974, the Congregation for the Causes of Saints issued the decree on writings, and on May 15, 1992, the decree of validity of the process. Between June 10 and October 28 of 1993, a diocesan investigation took place to add new documents to the process. The Positio was submitted to the Congregation for the Causes of Saints in December of 1999, to be studied for a proposal to the Pope to authorize a declaration on her life and virtues. On April 27, 2016 the Congregation for the Causes of Saints declared the heroicity of her virtues, in a decree confirmed Pope Francis. A miracle is now needed for her to be Beatified. Montse has now been declared Venerable.

Also pray for Montse's intercession in your own life
(a prayer for private devotion)
:O God, you granted your servant Montse the grace of serene and cheerful dedication to your will with admirable simplicity in everyday life. Grant that I may lovingly offer to you all my daily activity and convert it into Christian service for others. Deign to glorify your servant Montse and through her intercession grant me the favor I ask of you… (here make your request). Amen.[Our Father, Hail Mary, Glory be to the Father]
