Paul Flynn Waterford Hurling Legend Retires

Waterford's Paul Flynn has retired from intercounty hurling at the age of 34. He was one of the greatest free takers of all time. He was the game's greatest goal scoring free taker since Christy Ring and Nicky Rackard. Along with DJ Carey, Flynn is the only player of the last 25 years to feature in the leading 20 goal scorers in championship hurling history.

The accuracy and power of his shooting whether from placed balls or from play struck terror into opposing defences. The key to his success was his wrist work. His striking was poetry in motion. It was sharp . It was crisp. His anticipation and quick thinking cost hurling defences dearly. Invariably if he decided to go for goal he succeeded. He was always on alert for the goal scoring opportunity.

Sadly he failed to win an All Ireland Senior Hurling medal with Waterford. However he won three Munster Senior Hurling titles, a National league title and an All Star. He also won an All Ireland under-21 medal and a Munster minor medal.

Thanks to Paul for his monumental contribution to Waterford hurling. No doubt he will serve Ballygunner and Waterford in a selectorial or coaching capacity in the future. Undoubtedly he will impart his skills to juvenile hurlers in the Deise.

Peter Queally-new Waterford Senior Hurling selector

Peter Queally has played Senior Hurling and Football for Waterford. He has coached Waterford Minor Hurlers and is the current coach of Ballygunner.

Maurice Geary-new Waterford Senior Hurling selector

Maurice Geary has won two Waterford Senior Hurling medals with Ballyduff Upper in 1982 and 1987 and has a successful track record as a coach at the old CBS school Lismore. He coached Ballyduff Upper to victory in the Waterford Senior Hurling Championship in 2007.

Waterford Co Board-ratifies Davy Fitzgerald, Maurice Geary and Peter Queally as new management team

Tonight at a meeting of the Waterford Co Board in Dungarvan Davy Fitzgerald- star former Clare goalkeeper was ratified as the new manager of the Waterford Senior Hurling team.
He will be accompanied by Maurice Geary of Ballyduff Upper and Peter Queally of Ballydurn. Davy Fitzgerald has won two All Ireland Senior Hurling medals with Clare. He has coached LIT to two Fitzgibbon Cup victories and has a strong club coaching record. He is sure to bring energy and enthusiasm to the task.

Ballyduff -Waterford Senior Hurling Champions

Today Ballyduff Upper captained by Stephen Molumphy won their third Waterford Senior Hurling Championship defeating Ballygunner on a score of 1-18 to 1-14. Today also marks the 25th anniversary of their first Senior Hurling Championship victory.
This is a momentous achievement for a small club on the Cork border. It is hemmed in by Lismore, Ballysaggart and Tallow in Co. Waterford and by Kilworth, Fermoy , Conna and Araglin on the Cork side. Consequently it has a very small pick. However it has an incredible community spirit.
Since January the team has had 120-130 training sessions in addition to games.

This victory has major significance for Waterford Hurling. The Senior Hurling Championship has been dominated by Ballygunner and Mt. Sion for the last 17 years. It marks a shift in the centre of gravity to the west. This will undoubtedly infuse country clubs with a greater determination and enthusiasm to challenge the might of Ballygunner and Mt. Sion in the 2008 Championship. Clubs such as Abbeyside, Fourmilewater, Lismore, Tallow ,Stradbally and Ardmore will secretly fancy their chances. Whilst in the city De La Salle are capable of defeating Mt. Sion or Ballygunner.
