Ireland: Libertas leader Declan Ganley must come clean on his desire to abolish the CAP

On March 11, 2003 Declan Ganley wrote an article for the American Foreign Policy Institute- titled ‘Europe’s direction? A Voice from Ireland’ - in which he attacked the CAP.

  • He argued for the dismantling of the CAP and for zero dependence on farm subsidies.
  • He declared that "our very own European Common Agricultural Policy because of its trade barriers and subsidization, will result in thousands of deaths around the world".
  • He insisted that CAP structures were highly inefficient.
  • He argued for the removal of all of Europe's trade barriers and for unfettered free trade.
  • He propounded the view that the EU's decision to spend nearly half its budget on the CAP was "mindless".

Ganley's approach would decimate agriculture not alone in rural Ireland but also in Southern Germany and large areas of France, Scotland, Wales and Sweden. He is arguing for an extreme neo liberal approach which would benefit huge ranchers in the US and Brazil.
Mr Ganley is no friend of Irish agriculture.

Obama will cost you

This image summarises Obama's economic policy. His plans to double the tax on invested capital and to push up the top tax bracket to an effective 60%, will cripple the economy. His proposal to raise capital gains tax to 28% could trigger a stock market crash and will hit middle income earners very hard. He intends to increase spending by €1000 billion over four years. This is voodoo economics.

His policies of higher taxation and redistribution of wealth are akin to those of the French Communist Party. They are certainly to the left even of most European Socialist Parties. They are a recipe for economic stagnation and increased poverty. So deeply embedded are such policies in European countries such as France and Germany that conservative governments when elected to power can only tinker at the edges. To introduce the radical reform necessary is to court political destruction.
Will the American voters learn from the mistakes of their European friends?

Osama Bin Laden threatens Europe and the Pope

On March 20, 2008, Islamist websites, including Al-Ikhlas, posted an Al-Sahab audio message by Osama bin Laden, in which he threatens Europe for republishing the Muhammad cartoons.

In the message, bin Laden states that the republishing of the cartoons was part of a "new Crusade in which the pope has played a significant role," and that the Europeans' offense of defaming the Prophet is even graver than their crime of killing innocent Muslim women and children.

Addressing the Europeans, he threatens: "The response is what you see, not what you hear, and may our mothers mourn us if we fail to come to the aid of Allah's Messenger."
