The Vatican newspaper LOsservatore Romano has reported that Hitler had intentions to assassinate Pius XII as a revenge against the Italians who arrested his ally Benito Mussolini.
According to the reconstruction of the events, the plot was being planned at the Reichs General Headquarters in Berlin at the end of July 1943.
The Vatican newspaper says Hitler wanted to teach Italy a lesson by deporting or killing the King of Italy and the pope.
But the head of the German intelligence service at the time, admiral Wilhelm Canaris, decided to boycott the operation.
He told an Italian general who spread the word in Rome that the Nazis wanted to kill the pope. After that, the plan was abandoned.
Three years later, admiral Canaris was executed for participating in Operation Walkyria, the failed plot to assassinate Hitler. (Rome Reports)

Is Ira Mehlman using illegal immigration as a stick with which to beat the Catholic Church
Ira Mehlman Media Director of FAIR (Federation For American Immigration Reform) appeared on the Factor on Fox News tonight. This was hosted by ED Hill as Bill O’Reilly was away on assignment. He complained bitterly about the construction of a shelter for Central Americans travelling to the US. Apparently the Pope donated c$20,000 to help erect the $120,000 building.
I have never favoured illegal immigration. Nevertheless it is human decency to feed the hungry. The sum tendered by the Pope was a pittance.
Mehlman made a mountain out of a molehill. His contribution to the show appeared to be a thinly disguised attack on the Catholic Church. Was Mehlman motivated by a desire to damage the Papal visit?
Mehlman who is Jewish is leaving himself wide open to the charge that he is motivated by a detestation of Catholicism. Hopefully this is not so.

Osama Bin Laden threatens Europe and the Pope
On March 20, 2008, Islamist websites, including Al-Ikhlas, posted an Al-Sahab audio message by Osama bin Laden, in which he threatens Europe for republishing the Muhammad cartoons.
In the message, bin Laden states that the republishing of the cartoons was part of a "new Crusade in which the pope has played a significant role," and that the Europeans' offense of defaming the Prophet is even graver than their crime of killing innocent Muslim women and children.
Addressing the Europeans, he threatens: "The response is what you see, not what you hear, and may our mothers mourn us if we fail to come to the aid of Allah's Messenger."
