Ireland:Killarney jarveys banned in horses with nappies row

The Department of the Environment through the medium of the National Parks and Wildlife Service has banned jarveys-who fail to use dung-catching devices for their horses-from Killarney National Park. It said the majority of the more than a million visitors to the park annually walked the roads and that it had received numerous complaints about the mounds of horse dung, which litter the roadways. The Department argues that the dung is a health hazard and is aesthetically unpleasant. Jaunting car operators must have a required horse ″dung catcher″and licence.

The ″horses with nappies row″ shows no signs of resolution. The jarveys in Co Kerry claim that the move would put the safety of passengers at risk as the device would aggravate horses.Killarney National Park remains open to everybody else.

This dispute will undoubtedly provide plenty of fodder for comedians. However it has its serious side. Jarveys are dependent on a rather short tourist season for their income whilst the wider economy in Co. Kerry may suffer another blow in an already poor tourist season. This may prove to be a very bitter and protracted dispute.

The following email in Farsi we received today (Wednesday 24th june). It is written by a doctor from “Rasul Akram” hospital in Tehran who says that some people were killed not only by one bullet as they found two or three bullets in some bodies, close to one another, showing that shooters used barrage shooting against people and not only a single shot. A 68 year old man had 3 bullets in his body, two on his left shoulder and one in the left side of his stomach.

The doctors of the “Rasul Akram”hospital say they had been faced with 38 people killed during last week’s protests. Apparently, police took the corpse of the dead bodies out from the hospital and carried them away by truck. Most of their families still do not know if their children have been killed. Besides, among the corpse there were some 15, 16 years old kids. According to the email, the crew of the hospital protested in the street next to the hospital giving out the information about the violence to the people. The photos attached are from this demonstration which appears to have taken place earlier this week.

Ireland: MEP Colm Burke campaigns in Waterford

MEP Colm Burke has issued the following statement:

In my recent campaign visit to Waterford jobs, jobs, jobs” was key message from people and also that the Government must apply for European funding for Waterford immediately. The message from the people of Waterford could not be clearer; Waterford has suffered more than most counties from the economic downturn. Many people I have met on the canvass are struggling to cope and are desperate for the Government to take a proactive lead in ensuring that Waterford receives its fair share of support and European funding.

I voted recently in the European Parliament to change the criteria under which applications can be made for the European Globalisation Adjustment Fund. It will now be easier for EU funds to be deployed to help laid off workers in Waterford Crystal and in downstream companies which have also been affected.

The Government must apply for monies from the European Globalisation Adjustment Fund as a matter of urgency to deliver benefits for the laid off workers in Munster. The Government has no reason not to submit an application now. Any delay on the Government’s part will only further prolong the struggle being experienced by Waterford workers and their families.. There is also nothing preventing the Government from now putting mechanisms in place to prepare for the retraining and up skilling of those that have been made redundant.

Under the new rules, member states will be able to apply for financial support for businesses that lay off 500 or more workers, as opposed to the current threshold of 1,000.Over the next two years, the level of EU-provided financial support will increase to 75%, compared to the current 50%,. The ball is now in the Government’s court to proceed with an application. If it is successful the EU will provide €3 to match every euro the Government puts forward, up until now it was euro for euro.In real terms this should mean greater funding to help retrain and upskill and give entrepreneurial advice to workers laid off. It sends a strong message from the heart of Europe that funds are there to help those who, through no fault of their own, are affected by this crisis. Assistance of this kind is paramount so that those laid off can recover and drive Ireland out of recession.

A High Court judge in Zimbabwe has ordered police to immediately release 32 activists, including former Zimbabwean newscaster Jestina Mukoko.

A prominent human rights activist, Ms Mukoko appeared in court in Harare on Christmas Eve charged with plotting to overthrow President Robert Mugabe's government.

She had been missing for three weeks after she was abducted from her home by armed men
